The Key to a Healthy Heart
Happy February! It’s been awhile since I’ve written an entry but 2018 got off to a busy but very exciting start! We have officially launched Engage N’ Thrive, a monthly box that we have created for those 65 and better to encourage whole person wellness. Each month we create different activities and themes to encourage physical and emotional wellness. For February our theme is Heart Health. Being that our heart is one of the most essential pieces to our existence it is imperative that we take extra good care of it. For much of our senior population the topic of heart health can be of even more concern because diseases such as hypertension, atrial fibrillation, and strokes become even more prevalent as a person age increases. In fact in 2015, heart disease was ranked number one in the leading cause of death. Here are some steps to help our seniors take better care of their hearts:
#1-I will avoid trans fats: Trans fats clog arteries by raising bad cholesterol and lowering good cholesterol. I will choose fresh and healthy foods and say “no” to trans fats.
#2- I will practice good dental hygiene,(especially flossing my teeth daily) and have regular dental check-ups, to not only protect my smile, but also my heart and blood vessels.
#3- I will get 7- 9 hours of sleep nightly: This will be easier if I don’t take afternoon naps, and if I do quiet activities and avoid bright lights before heading to bed.
#4- I will use a timer to keep from sitting too long: When it rings, I will get up and walk around (putting things away, getting things done) so I will be healthy and my home neat.
#5- I will avoid second-hand smoke by being firm with smokers that I need to protect my heart and lungs. I will look for opportunities to be outside and breathe fresh air.
Following these 5 simple steps will help you protect your heart.
